Seneca, the favourite classic of the early fathers of the church and of the Middle Ages, whom Jerome, Tertullian, and Augustine speak of as "Seneca noster," who was believed to have corresponded with St. Paul, and upon whom [Footnote: On the "De Clementia," an odd subject for the man who burned Servetus alive for differing with him.] Calvin wrote a commentary, seems almost forgotten in modern times. Perhaps some of his popularity may have been due to his being supposed to (...) be the author of those tragedies which the world has long ceased to read, but which delighted a period that preferred Euripides to Aeschylus: while casuists must have found congenial matter in an author whose fantastic cases of conscience are often worthy of Sanchez or Escobar. Yet Seneca's morality is always pure, and from him we gain, albeit at second hand, an insight into the doctrines of the Greek philosophers, Zeno, Epicurus, Chrysippus, &c., whose precepts and system of religious thought had in cultivated Roman society taken the place of the old worship of Jupiter and Quirinus. Since Lodge's edition (fol. 1614), no complete translation of Seneca has been published in England, though Sir Roger L'Estrange wrote paraphrases of several Dialogues, which seem to have been enormously popular, running through more than sixteen editions. I think we may conjecture that Shakespeare had seen Lodge's translation, from several allusions to philosophy, to that impossible conception "the wise man," and especially from a passage in "All's Well that ends Well," which seems to breathe the very spirit of "De Beneficiis.". The first full philological edition in English of the Roman philosopher Seneca's De Clementia. It includes the Latin text with apparatus criticus, a new English translation, a substantial introduction, and a commentary on matters of textual and literary criticism and issues of socio-political, historical, cultural, and philosophical significance.

si quis patriae meae pecuniam credat, non dicam me illius debitorem nec hoc aes alienum profitebor aut candidatus aut reus: ad exsoluendum tamen hoc dabo portionem meam.If anyone were to lend money to my country, I will not call myself his debtor nor will I declare this as money owed either when a candidate or when prosecuted: nevertheless, I will contribute my share to paying off the debt. Miriam Griffin drew attention to the comment of Justus Lipsius: ‘a defendant might (...) have to make such a declaration in cases involving financial penalties, such as extortion and peculation, for when the litis aestimatio [‘assessment of damages’] was made, it would be important to know who the other claimants to the convicted man's assets were, and how encumbered his property was.’ No further elucidation, however, has been made since Lipsius. Mommsen failed to record this passage in his Staatsrecht and Strafrecht, and, as far as we know, no monograph on Roman criminal law mentions the passage of Seneca. (shrink)

Seine Briefe an Lucilius sind eine Einführung in die Philosophie der Stoiker, deren Ideal es war, durch Gelassenheit und Seelenruhe weise zu werden. Seneca bietet keine systematische Darstellung, sondern zeigt Wege zur philosophischen Bewältigung konkreter Probleme des menschlichen Lebens: Wege zum wahren Glück. Die Briefe sind unmittelbar ansprechend, lebendig dialogisch geschrieben und heute noch aktuell. Band I ist 2007 erschienen.

In his moral treatise, De Brevitate Vitae("On the Shortness of Life"), the Stoic philosopher Seneca explored ways to change our experience of time so as to get more enrichment from the present, to diminish regret for the past and anxiety about the future, and to make our lives feel long even though death might cut them short at any moment. As he famously said, "it is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot (...) of it.... Life is long if you know how to use it." The problem of how to make the most of our time is a universal one and especially pressing in a society like ours, which puts a high value on the maximizing fulfillment. The fear of missing out, or FOMO as it is known in popular culture, attests to our deep need for the kind of teaching Seneca offers: A guide to living in the moment and making time count. "Live headlong," "Consider each day a life" - In these ways Seneca expressed something like what we mean by "Be here now." In this volume for our Ancient Wisdom for Modern Readers series, his fourth, James Romm proposes a new translation of Seneca's De Brevitate Vitae along with selections from other moral essays, especially "On the Happy Life" and "On Tranquillity of Mind," that similarly deal with the need to use time well. Several of the "Moral Epistles" will be drawn on as well, including the very first letter in his immense collection, where Seneca tells his addressee, Lucilius, that "all other things are foreign to us; time alone is ours.". senecas Apokolokyntosis ist eine Parodie auf die Kaiserapotheose. Sie drückt damit auch die innere Distanz aufgeklärter Römer zu einem Zeitproblem aus, das durch die Vergöttlichung des Claudius neuerlich aktuell geworden war. Schon die Neubildung des Wortes "Apo-kolokyntosis", oft als "Verkürbissung" übersetzt, ist ein boshaftes Wortspiel, das Assoziationen an "Ver-gottung" hervorruft. Seneca hat die durch Claudius ausgesprochene Verbannung nach Corsica nie verwunden; entsprechend bissig geht er mit dem als behinderten Trottel dargestellten Kaiser um. Die Satire lebt von einer Vielfalt der (...) Stilebenen; ständig parodierend ist sie um Anleihen aus älterer Literatur bemüht. Dem Wechsel des Schauplatzes entspricht das bunt zusammengesetzte Personal: Gestalten der Götter- und Dämonenwelt, Heroen, aber auch verstorbene oder noch lebende Personen bevölkern die Szene. O modo como os homens conduzem suas vidas em meio às atribulações cotidianas, deixando-se levar por um sem-número de atividades que, em vez de lhes trazerem satisfação, acabam por torná-los ainda mais afastados de si mesmos segue sendo uma preocupação no mundo “pós-moderno”. This edition, the first modern one in English, introduces undergraduates and more advanced students to the therapeutic possibilities of Seneca's Stoic philosophy. The short treatises De otio and De brevitate vitae balance each other by representing different but complementary aspects of Senecan philosophy: in De otio, one's duty to the 'active' life, in De brevitate vitae, one's duty to oneself in reclaiming life from the impositions made upon the self. The provocative Senecan message is to promote introspection in life, and (...) to suggest the benefits of an inner existence of the personal. Estas reflexões têm como objetivo principal mostrar a surpreendente coincidência de intuições que se verifica entre Sêneca e Freud no que diz respeito ao conceito de consciência moral e, mais precisamente, à questão do sentimento de culpa. Efetivamente, tanto o estoico romano quanto o inventor da psicanálise sondaram e exploraram com uma acuidade insuperável a dinâmica que se desenrola no interior do sujeito quanto à representação que ele se faz das chamadas más ações. Isto significa que toda diferença se anula (...) entre, de um lado, o desejo de cometer uma má ação e, de outro, o pôr em prática a mesma ação desejada. Em outros termos, a intenção e o ato se equivalem, porquanto o sujeito já desejou executá-lo. O sentimento de culpa, para Freud, nasce da interiorização da autoridade ou do supereu, que é a instância da censura ou da reprovação. Portanto, o sujeito se torna doravante o seu próprio tribunal, o seu próprio algoz. (shrink)

There is an increasing interest in publications about the sources of meaning in life; books about the art of living are immensely popular. This article discusses whether one of the ancient predecessors of current 'art of living' theories, the Stoa and more particularly Seneca, can be of interest to educators today. Seneca's explicit writings on education are relatively few, but in his letters to his friend Lucilius we find several ideas as to how educators can assist students to become wise (...) and virtuous adults. The main characteristic of the virtuous sage is his ability to maintain tranquillity of mind. While we disagree with the radicalism of Seneca's view on the extirpation of emotions, we have discovered insights that we believe can be a valuable source for educators and students in their reflections on the meaning of education for the business of life.
